Imitrex Directions? |
 |
| |
Your Imitrex dose may vary depending on your age, weight, and the problem being treated. Your doctor can answer your questions about personalized dosages or how often to take it. Carefully read the information leaflet included with your prescription and review it again each time you refill your prescription. Take your prescription only as directed by your doctor. Imitrex is intended to provide relief for acute migraine headaches, but it's not intended to prevent or reduce the number of headaches experienced. This prescription is used only to treat actual migraine attacks. Take one whole pill with a glass of water when you first experience migraine symptoms. If you do not get complete relief or if your symptoms reoccur, you may take another dose, but you should wait at least two hours. You shouldn't take a second dose for the same migraine if your symptoms do not improve unless your doctor approves. No one should take more than 200 mg within twenty-four hours. Using Imitrex to treat over four headaches a month has not been shown to be safe. Get immediate medical care if you have pain or tightness in the chest or throat while using this medicine, or if your pain lasts for longer than usual or is particularly severe. Get emergency medical treatment if you suddenly have severe stomach pain while using this medicine, or if you develop wheezing, heart throbbing, shortness of breath, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, skin rash or lumps, or hives. If you suddenly have an unusually high temperature, redness of the face, tingling, tiredness, heaviness, pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, or sickness while using Imitrex, consult with the doctor about it at your next visit. Women should not take Imitrex unless they are using alternate birth control methods. Women who are pregnant or who plan to become pregnant should talk to their doctor about whether or not to use Imitrex. Discard any expired medication. If your doctor advises that you stop taking Imitrex, discard any pills you have left. Taking Imitrex may potentially cause dizziness or drowsiness. Be careful when driving or doing any other tasks which demand coordination, alertness, or physical dexterity. This medication may alter blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Check with your doctor about adjusting diabetes medication dosages. Do not take Imitrex if you are currently using or have taken MAO inhibitors in the previous two weeks. If you do not know whether any of your medications contain an MAO inhibitor, your doctor or pharmacist can tell you. Anyone with previous medical problems should talk with their doctor if they are interested in taking this medicine. |

Anything Else I Should Know About Imitrex? |
 |
| |
Imitrex is used to treat headaches. The medication narrows blood vessels (vasoconstriction) in the brain. It also prohibits the release of chemicals in the body that increase headache pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and other migraine symptoms. Imitrex can be used to treat vascular headaches such as cluster headaches and migraines. It will not prevent these headaches or make them occur less often, but it will ease the discomfort of an attack already in progress. |
