Soma works to relax the muscles by blocking pain messages sent to the brain. The ingredient codeine is a narcotic analgesic pain reliever that changes the way a body senses pain. Soma is used as one part of a treatment plan for injuries and muscular conditions, in addition to rest and physical therapy. Soma may be prescribed for other uses as well. |

If you have any questions about Soma, ask your pharmacist. Follow your doctor's instructions exactly. You should drink a full glass of water with each dose. Do not take more than 1,400 mg (four tablets) in 24 hours. |

Soma Side Effects? |

If, while taking Soma, you experience any of the following side effects, go to the emergency room: paralysis (loss of feeling) or extreme weakness; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); agitation or tremor; vision loss; red, black, or bloody stools; or blood in your vomit.
You are more likely to experience less severe side effects. You can continue taking Soma in these cases, but inform your doctor of your side effects. Potential side effects include headache; depression; insomnia; drowsiness or dizziness; hiccups; blurred vision or small pupils; faint ringing in the ears; or nausea, vomiting, or constipation. Other side effects not listed here are possible. Call your doctor if any of these is persistent or bothersome. |

The prescription Soma is not recommended for anyone with acute intermittent porphyria. This medication contains codeine which may be habit forming. Because of this, anyone with a history of drug or alcohol dependency should be closely monitored while using Soma. Tell your doctor if you have an enlarged prostate, kidney disease, liver disease, an ulcer in your stomach or intestines, urinary retention, hypothyroidism, a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder, a head injury, or Addison's disease. It's possible that you can't use Soma, or you may need supplemental monitoring or reduced dosages. Pregnant or nursing women should talk to their doctor before combining Soma with aspirin. Anyone under twelve years of age should not take Soma. |

There are quite a few that drugs can potentially interact with Soma and cause severe sedation. You doctor should know about all medications you use, especially phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), mesoridazine (Serentil), perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine), thioridazine (Mellaril), and trifluoperazine (Stelazine); brompheniramine (Dimetane, Bromfed, others), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton, Teldrin, others), azatadine (Optimine), clemastine (Tavist), and many others; narcotics (pain killers) such as meperidine (Demerol), morphine (MS Contin, MSIR, others), propoxyphene (Darvon, Darvocet), hydrocodone (Lorcet, Vicodin), oxycodone (Percocet, Percodan), fentanyl (Duragesic), and codeine (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Tylenol #3, others); sedatives such as phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal), amobarbital (Amytal), and secobarbital (Seconal); or antidepressants such as doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).
Tell your doctor and pharmacist that you are taking Soma if you are also using medications such as angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), and enalapril (Vasotec); commonly used ACE inhibitors, including fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), quinapril (Accupril), and ramipril (Altace); probenecid (Benebid) and sulfinpyrazone (Anturane); and beta-blockers used to treat high blood pressure and other heart conditions such as acebutolol (Sectral), metoprolol (Lopressor), propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), and carteolol (Cartrol).
There are prescription and nonprescription products that can change the effects of Soma and lead to dangerous side effects: oral anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin); nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Rufen, others), ketoprofen (Orudis, Oruvail), and naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Aleve); other commonly used NSAIDs, including diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam), etodolac (Lodine), fenoprofen (Nalfon), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), indomethacin (Indocin), ketorolac (Toradol), nabumetone (Relafen), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), and tolmetin (Tolectin); other salicylates (forms of aspirin) such as salsalate (Disalcid), choline salicylate, and magnesium salicylate; bismuth subsalicylate in drugs such as Pepto-Bismol; and calcium supplements and antacids. Other drugs that should not be combined with aspirin and Soma include steroids such as prednisone (Deltasone), oral antidiabetic drugs such as glipizide (Glucotrol) and glyburide (Micronase, Diabeta), alcohol, lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others), and cyclosporine (Sandimmune). Call your doctor before you take any new over-the-counter medication. |

Soma Missed Dose? |

Just skip the missed dose if you discover you forgot to take your Soma when scheduled. Never double up in an effort to catch up. Just continue with the regular dosing schedule the following morning. |
